STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO (June 20, 2010): Beginning Wednesday, July 21st STARS and Adaptive Adventures will host Steamboat’s 5th Annual ‘Behind the Boat’ Water Sports Camp for people with disabilities. The event will feature beginner waterski and wakeboarding lessons as well as free riding for both experienced skiers and first-timers,. The event will include Adaptive Adventures co-founder and 2005 Colorado Ski Country Disabled Athlete of the Year, Matt Feeney. This year’s schedule also includes a day of rafting on the Colorado River with Colorado River Center on July 23rd.
Steamboat resident and STARS camps coordinator Craig Kennedy is excited to bring back this event that helped to empower participants to try different and challenging activities. Kennedy states of last year’s event, "I grew up waterskiing as a kid and I never thought I would waterski again after my accident. This was the most fun I have had yet in 14 years in a wheelchair!"
Returning skier John Vcelka of Denver, CO, states, "I really feel like the whole environment around the camp encourages and inspires everyone who participates and volunteers. It is a complete uplifting experience."
The event returns to Bald Eagle Lake, a private water ski facility donated by local business owner, Ed MacArthur, just east of town on US Highway 40. The cost of the camp is just $150 and includes lodging, meals, and equipment for all activities. Scholarships are also available.
